Bristed dedicates the book to Chancellor James Kent. Bristed's prefatory Advertisement gloats that he successfully "oppose[d] the headlong current of popular opinion" that France's conquest of Europe was a foregone conclusion. Now, writing from New York in January 1818, he explains that his book outlines "the physical, intellectual, and moral character, capacity, and resources of the United States." He promises "to steer clear of all undue bias for or against either of the great contending political parties."
