Ledyard (b. 1751), known as Connecticut's most famous explorer, served with Captain Cook, publishing the Journal of Captain Cook's Las Voyage, the first book on Hawaii to be published in the United States, He was involved in the fur trade, and encouraged by Jefferson to explore a route to the U. S> from Russia. He was arrested by Catherine the Great and deported, then set off to explore Africa, where he died.
