By Keating, William H.
London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1825. First English edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 volumes 8vo. Green bookcloth, gilt spine title. Large folding map, 8 plates, Volume I is nearly invisibly rebacked with the original spine laid-on and the inner hinges repaired, though the inner hinge repair has added a certain stiffness to the hinge; volume two has some wear to the hinges. Both volumes are very good. The plates and the map have generally offset to the facing page or fold.

This binding is a very early example of bookcloth, which was still in its early, even experimental, stages in 1825. The American edition was published in 1824 in Philadelphia.

An important chronicle of the United States military expedition that explored the upper Mississippi and Minnesota (then known as St. Peter's) rivers in 1823. The expedition sought to collect scientific data and information on the natural history, geography, and Native American tribes of the region. Keating was the expedition's geologist and used his own notes and those of other members, including zoologist Thomas Say, and astronomer James Colhoun, in writing this book.
