[DIARY] [TRAVEL] ANONYMOUS EUROPEAN TRAVEL JOURNAL

  • 1967
1967. 6 1/2” x 4 ¼” x 1” green leatherette travel journal with gold ornamentation on the spine and cover. 93 leaves of lined paper headed with “Places Visited, Date, Place, and Weather”. About half full with handwritten entries in blue pen by an unnamed American female college student [almost certainly from Virginia] traveling through Europe with a student group. She pinned a signed pen drawing of her done on the back of a deposit check, which she annotated below, “Done by Gregory L. Packard Mon Aug 7, 1967 in our MG – in Salisbury parking lot”. Other drawings by her include a tableau of the hotel window and a drawing of the boat on which the unnamed student and her friends would be sailing from Greece to Majorca and Paris.~~The mysterious young lady wrote in her diary nearly every night from the start of her trip on June 16th, 1967 through August 11, 1967. Her summer abroad took her from Washington, DC to Greece, Italy, Tunisia, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and England. The entries are nostalgic, describing youthful experiences like staying up all night talking, falling in love with her fellow travelers or others she met along the way, and not wanting to go home. Reading her observations about the different customs, food, and sights along her journey is pleasantly relatable to anyone recalling their first experience away from home. A tantalizing record made all the more intriguing for its author’s anonymity.~~Repair to front shoulder.
