"John Payne Collier is chiefly known as a Shakespearean critic and later forger, but his interest began with rather more general early English drama; his early publications included Five Old Plays and A history of English Dramatic Poetry and Annals of the Stage. He also edited the papers of Edward Alleyn, actor and later founder of Dulwich College, for the Shakespeare Society, and was employed by the 6th Duke of Devonshire as Librarian. He represented the Duke at the prolonged sale (1834-6) of the collection of the great bibliophile and book collector Richard Heber, and became a member of the Garrick Club and the Society of Antiquaries under his aegis. In 1842-4 he published a new edition of Shakespeare's works in 8 volumes." (Royal Trust Collection).
