White got her start as a rival to Clara Bow herself in the late silent film era, with title roles like the one in the 1928 film adaptation of J. P. McEvoy's Show Girl, directed by Alfred Santell and co-starring Mexican-American heartthrob Donald Reed. It's likely Alice White was the inspiration for turning Dixie Dugan, the titular Show Girl and an iconic brown-eyed brunette, into the vivacious blonde of the film and its sequel, Show Girl in Hollywood.
