London: The Gresham Publishing Company, 345 Southampton St., Strand, 1910. [LITERARY WORK] [HISTORY]. J.H.F. BACON, E. WALCOUSINS, H.R. MILLAR, G.F. WATTS, Ford Madox BROWN, illustrators.
First edition. 8vo; xiv, 446pp; olive cloth over board, gilt stamped lettering on front and spine, Art Deco style tree on front board with 3 ships stamped in green and gold signed "E.W.", decorated spine; top edge gilt; 24 glazed inserted half-tone illustrated plates, 4 in color; dark olive eps; ownership bookplate stamp on half-title lacking name; light bump to lower front corner, light foxing to fore edge, light foxing throughout; binding tight, no bad odors; very good plus. The wonderful Art-Deco style cover design can most likely be attributed to Ernest Charles Wallcousins (1882-1976), a noted British artist who contributed to some of the illustrated plates.
The book explores the interest and importance of Celtic mythology, the sources from where it sprang, the "Ancient Briton", and their religion and Druidism. There are sections on Gaelic gods and their stories, and on the British gods and their stories, as well as the survival of Celtic paganism.
