A lightly worn, decorative cartonnage romantique binding of gilt stamped on pale blue. The front pictorial features a ship at sea, sails set, with others in the background. The term cartonnage denotes a binding made of cardboard or think paper over the boards, then sized with gelatin.
This volume has a listing of the 46 volumes available from the publisher in the set of Bibliothèque de la Jeunesse Chretiénne, or the Christian Youth's Library. There are three engraved plates with tissue guards, as well as a pictorial title page. One of the plates pictures the death of Captain de Langle (Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle) at the hands of the natives in what is now American Samoa. Le Langle was second in command of the Laperouse expedition to the Pacific.
