New York, 1873. NA. Very Good. Scarce. OCLC First Search suggests that the Ringling Museum has broadsides that may be similar to this one, but otherwise, we could find no copies of Den Stone broadsides in the same vein. The broadside measures 70 by 27 cm. The side headlined with the Central Park Menagerie has 31 woodcut vignettes along its vertical sides. The flip side, relating to his Circus Troupe, has nine woodcut vignette illustrations forming a center column, with a textual description of the diverse circus acts, which together, anticipate the Western shows which were to catch the popular imagination a decade later. The broadside has a tear running almost the entirely of its width near the bottom, but there is no loss. Since we are of the school of thought that this should be matted and framed, we have opted not to do a repair which such recommended treatment would make superfluous. Otherwise, there is browning around the edges and other signs of wear but we think generally well-preserved.
