Text illustrations from drawings. Stiff pictorial wrappers printed in black and colors. One volume lightly rubbed at head of spine. A fine set. Volumes published in 1947; 1948; 1954. Very scarce, especially when offered together. Volume II has a presentation, signed by the author "To Sister, with Love, W. H. Hutchinson." Volume III is signed by the author. A collection of western stories by a man who knew how to tell a story, all true. "Hutch" was born in Denver, moved to Goldfield, Nevada at the age of six, lived all over the West and deep south as a teenager, worked cattle, worked the mines, worked as a railroad fireman and as a bellboy, went to sea from 1933 to 1944, worked in industrial relations, was a free-lance writer, etc., etc. Robert Haines Jr. (owner of the Argonaut Book Shop for 55 years) knew Hutch and said of him" Hutch was one of the nicest people I've met. I remember him well. He looked like a rough and tumble range rider". These stories cover a wide range of western topics, including buffalo hunters; the camel experiment in the West; Great Plains traders; Wild Bill Hickok; Henry Crabbe, the Filibuster; scalp hunters; the mountain men; Jedediah Smith; Peter Lassen; "Billy Lowden's Ride;" "Madame Blackjack," etc., etc. .
