Kuhlmann was a major French chemical manufacturer in the dyestuff industry, it merged with two other major French dye producers to form Francolor before eventually selling a majority stake to I.G. Farben in 1941. This was a major international story at the time given that Early colour specialties of Kuhlman included artificial ultramarine, and their groundbreaking red dye derived from sulfuric acid, invented by Charles Frederic Kuhlmann himself. Prior to this invention, madder was the most expensive of all natural vegetable dyes on the market, making an artificial substitute incredibly lucrative.
