Society for the Chemical Industry in Basel, known as Ciba, founded in 1884 is a Swiss company that later became Ciba-Geigy and eventually the pharmaceutical giant Novartis. As is typical of the European pharmaceutical giants, it began as a dyestuff manufacturer. Ciba evolved out of an earlier company founded by Alexander Clavel which focused on the production of fuchsine, a bright magenta dye, used for silk-dyeing. It also became incredibly popular for dyeing foods and beverages, including red wine.
