ß Riverside Bookshelf series. First published in 1870, Aldrich's semi-autobiographical novel follows the mischievous adventures of Tom Bailey, a young boy growing up in a fictional New England town during the mid-1800s. The book was a pioneer in "bad boy" literature, which rejected the overly moralistic tone of its predecessors and attempted a more humorous and realistic portrayal of childhood. Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer followed.
