Founded in 1863 as Friedrich Bayer &Co., Bayer was one of the original dyestuff bohemoths of Germany. Its original specialties were Fuchsine (for magenta) and anilene (for indigo). Bayer eventually became a pharmaceutical giant with its worldwide trademark of Asprin. Bayer became part of the ill fated I.G. Farben congolmerate in 1925 and was heavily involved in the associated war crimes of the parent comopany. After the war and the dissolution of I.G. Farben, Farbenfabriken Bayer AG was created in 1951 as an independent company, returning to its roots in commercial dyes, and shortly therafter produced this volume. "Farbenfabriken" was dropped from the name in 1972, by which time Bayer had regained its status as a global leader in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
