§ First edition in English, translated by the daughters of the eminent astronomer William Lassell. The Life was compiled by Bruhns and others to commemorate the centenary of Humboldt's birth and first published in German in 1872. The contributors drew heavily on Humboldt's own letters and the reminiscences of his acquaintances to create a detailed and affectionate account of the life of the extraordinary explorer-naturalist.
