Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was a world-renowned author, poet, civil rights activist and performer. She was a pioneering autobiographical writer, best known for her 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman. Angelou published seven autobiographies, several poetry collections, and three essay books. Her 1971 volume Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
