R and R. [Cover title for Japanese Cheesecake Calendar]
- N.P.: Ad-Ventures, 1953
N.P.: Ad-Ventures, 1953. Very good. 14½” x 10”. 13 leaves held along top edge with steel clasp. Very good: folded horizontally at center; some chips and tears to first and last leaves.
This is a rare and enigmatic calendar that we believe was marketed to American Servicemen in Japan. Each month has a drawing of a Japanese model in the style of American pin-up art, with a common Japanese phrase written phonetically in Roman letters. Images were signed with the name “Karr,” which we presume to be a last name, but we have not been able to uncover the artist.
While OCLC finds nothing similar a Google search reveals that the artwork and design were used for a 1954 calendar published by Hayes-Adams Enterprises. The images of the women in the 1954 version are the same, but they are used for different months, and the sayings for each calendar month are different.
