Songdam sŏnsaeng silgi 松潭先生實紀 [The Authentic Chronicle of Master Songdam]

By CH’AE, P’ir-hun 蔡必勲, ed
53 folding leaves. Four kwŏn in one vol. Small folio (313 x 195 mm.), orig. wrappers (covers stained), new stitching. [Korea]: Preface dated 1806.

First and only edition of this rare early 19th-century literary collection documenting the life and works of Chae Eung-rin 蔡應麟 (1529-84), a distinguished mid-Chosŏn Confucian scholar and high government official, known by his pen name Songdam 松潭 (“Pine Tree Pond”). After forgoing advancement in officialdom, Chae dedicated himself to teaching, personal cultivation, and scholarly fellowship in rural seclusion — an ethos reflected in both his poetry and the enduring pavilions he built along the river in Daegu, Korea.

Compiled and published in 1806 by his descendant Ch’ae P’ir-hun (1759-1838), this collection includes five poems by Chae Eung-rin, as well as an extensive appendix of encomia, epitaphs, stele inscriptions, memorial essays, and postfaces authored by prominent contemporaries and descendants. The poems reflect the tranquility and scholarly ideals of Chae’s chosen retreat, while the various appendices provide a comprehensive portrait of Songdam’s influence and the local veneration of his legacy. Of particular note is the detailed record of the posthumous establishment of the Yuhori Shrine and Academy 柳湖里祠記, underscoring Chae’s lasting role in local educational and Confucian traditions. Songdam sŏnsaeng silgi thus offers valuable insight into the intellectual networks, commemorative practices, and educational ideals of the Chosŏn literati.

The Preface is signed and dated 1806, and the extensive colophon by former Assistant Minister of War Kwon Bang 權訪 (1740-1808) and a short annotation by Yi Donggeup 李東汲 (1738-1811) are likewise dated 1806.
