Framed and Matted Bronze Medallion Commemorating Yiddish Writer Shalom Aleichem 1859-1916

  • 1920
1920. Very Good. A dignified bronze medallion of the greatest of Yiddish authors, and also one of the greatest of comic authors in any language, whose most famous character, Tevye the Milkman, became the central character in "Fiddler on the Roof". The bronze is rare -- we could find other medallions honoring Sholem Aleichem, but not this one. Given that the medallion gives his birth and death years, we would conjecture that the medallion was issued to honor him not long after his passing. While we haven't concrete evidence that this is so, the circa 1920 dating is consistent with the frame and the fabric matting that surrounds the medallion, as well as the wear on that fabric. We find it highly unlikely, regardless, that this medallion was created after the Second World War. The medallion is 5 cm in diameter. The bronze frame is 9 by 13 cm. We have not taken the medallion out of the frame to examine its back.
