Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor (1937-2016) was a culinary griot, writer, and longtime NPR food columnist, contributing hundreds of commentaries to NPR between 1980 and 2013. Born into a Gullah family in South Carolina, later living in Philadelphia, Paris, and New York. In a lifetime of other fabulous achievements, she was a cook, singer and dance in Sun Ra's Solar Myth Arkestra.
