Lily Klasner grew up alongside outlaws and Indians and could hold her own among them. She took leadership of the family when she was only 13 years old, after her father was murdered. She became a great rider, shooter, and could handle any "man's job" In later years she became a school teacher and telegrapher. She kept a meticulous diary, aided with newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, and documents, and created an autobiographical manuscript of her experiences as a woman in the West. This manuscript was discovered in an old trunk in an abandoned house in 1968, and author Eve Ball undertook the task of editing and annotating this manuscript, resulting in this book. Also includes the personal diary of John Chisum "Cattle King of the Pecos", who was an intimate friend and counselor of Klasner and her family. .
