[Broadside or Flyer Promotion] English and Classical School, Brooklyn, N.Y. [Near the Corner of Lafayette and Clermont Avenues]
- 1857
1857. Near Fine. A one-page flyer promoting a new school, one to be opened less than a week after the date of the announcement. From the announcement, it would seem that the school was to initially have just a single instructor, called the Principal, but we can't be sure of that. The school was taking students of all ages, with a cost per quarter running from $10 to $14, the greater amount required for students 14 and older, and extra charges imposed for the instruction of modern languages, which ones, not specified, but given in the plural, and for drawing. And food and "fuel" would also be an extra $.75. What is meant by "fuel" we can only guess! At the bottom are a list of a dozen references, these from private schools and universities, including West Point and Union College. The description of the instruction is mostly vague, but a point is made that discipline would be of a moral, not physical, kind, and there would be a brief religious exercise each day but that the school was to be non-sectarian. Measuring 20 by 12.5 cm. Other than one light stray ink line, clean.
