Calvin Coolidge (1872 - 1933) was the 30th President of the United States (1923 - 1929), ascending to the position after President Warren Harding died in office in 1923. Known as a quiet and principled president, he signed the war-denouncing Kellogg-Briand Pact (1928), the Indian Citizenship Act (1924), which granted citizenship to Native Americans born in the US, and the Revenue Acts of 1924, 1926, and 1928 to reduce the national debt. In 1927, he famously responded to reporters questioning whether he would run for another term by handing out slips of paper with the statement "I do not choose to run for President in 1928." .
