New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937 First edition, first printing. One of 10,130 copies. Publisher's smooth black cloth, with the author's signature stamped in gilt to front board, spine lettered in gilt, and beige top stain; in the original gold dust jacket designed by Neely, lettered in white and black. Near fine book, with a light tidemark to bottom right corner of front board, very light toning to board edges, else fresh and bright; very good unclipped dust jacket, with some scratches to spine, shallow chipping to spine ends, some edgewear to panels, light tidemarks to top corners of flaps, and slightly nicked corners. Overall, an attractive example of the dust jacket, including a bright front panel. Hanneman A14. To Have and Have Not is the first novel Hemingway published after A Farewell to Arms in 1929. The novel features the character Harry Morgan, who lives in Key West- "that paradise of the 'haves' and the purgatory of the 'have-nots.'" Morgan, a sea captain and honest man, is forced to run commercial and sometimes human contraband between Florida and Cuba. To Have and Have Not was made into a film in 1944, directed by Howard Hawks and starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (interestingly, William Faulkner worked on the screenplay, making To Have and Have Not the only film to have been collaborated on by two winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature).. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
