Sacramento Celebrity Series...Memorial Auditorium...S. Hurok Presents Marian Anderson [cover title]

  • [N.p., probably New York City , 1945
By [African Americana]: [Anderson, Marian]
[N.p., probably New York City, 1945. Near fine.. [4]pp., on a single folded sheet. Minor wear. A very rare, seemingly unrecorded program for a performance by legendary African-American contralto Marian Anderson at Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California. Anderson was accompanied by Franz Rupp at the piano for a host of classical pieces by Handel, Bassani, Bizet, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and others. The performance was presented in five acts, the last of which saw Anderson performing four traditional "Negro spirituals," the first two in dialect. The program is accompanied by a copy of Marian Anderson A Decade of Great Song in America, published in New York by Hurok Attractions, circa 1945. This pamphlet offers a career retrospective on Anderson, and includes numerous photographs from her career up to that point.

OCLC records eleven copies of this work. We could locate no other copies of the Sacramento program.
