8vo, 410 pp. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in silver on backstrip, blue top-stain, in original unclipped ($5.95) photo-illustrated dust-jacket. Light marks to the top stain, light toning and edgewear to the jacket, closed tear in center of the back panel and short split in front flap hinge repaired with tape to verso. Overall a very good copy without any marks of former ownership.

§ First edition, first printing, of Rechy's first novel, signed by him on the title page. Rechy's influential and best-selling semi-autobiographical account of a gay hustler crossing the country from New York to Los Angeles, often included on lists of the most frequently banned books in America. In 1997 Rechy was the first novelist to receive the PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Award.
