The Yearling
- New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1938
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1938. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First printing with Scribner "A" and seal printed on the copyright page. A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Publisher's cream linen boards. Toning to hinges and a bit of foxing to lower board. Dust jacket with a bit of chipping to edges and some minor foxing, still an appealing example.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' beloved 1938 novel, set in rural Florida, The Yearling follows the story of Jody Baxter, a child who becomes friends with a fawn after his father kills the fawn's mother. The book was the best-selling novel the year it was released and would win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1939. Translated into over twenty languages, The Yearling was also adapted into a 1946 film starring Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman, who would both receive Academy Award nominations for their performances. "The thing about The Yearling, its great claim to distinction, is that it is able to make so much of simple, homely events" (contemporary New York Times review). The woodcut illustrations were completed by artist, author, and educator Edward Shenton (1895 - 1977). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
