Thompson's first book, this critically acclaimed chronicle of a year spent with this notorious motorcycle gang changed the face of reportage forever (inaugurating "Gonzo Journalism.") The year spent with this gang (and others) gave Thompson, and, in turn, the reading public, insight into their sub-culture; it ended abruptly when Thompson was nearly beaten to death by some of its members.
