Tarzan of the Apes
- Chicago, IL: A. C. McClurg & Co, 1914
Very Good+ with light rubbing and oxidation to gilt, slight crimping to spine ends with minor fraying at crown; faint mottling in raking light to rear board. Bookplate of former owner at front pastedown with light foxing to endsheets, small ink mark on front free endpaper top corner with transfer to verso, even toning to content.
The first book in the wildly popular Tarzan series, first printed in the pulp magazine The All-Story in 1912. Written after a succession of failed career choices, including a brief stint as a cowboy and stationary shop owner, Burroughs' turned to adventure writing having been inspired by Rudyard Kipling's character in The Jungle Book, Mowgli. A handsome copy of a book that often turns up worse for wear.
