Alpen-Flora [58 samples]

By Anon. - PLANT SPECIMENS

[1855]. Specimen box.. Front joint of the box is cracked; inner sleeve wanting two flaps. The samples are in near fine condition. The metal clasp is wanting the locking mechanism and retains only the mounts front and back.. Oblong 4to, wooden box as book form, covered in embossed cloth with clasp and gilt edges. The box is stamped on the front cover: Alpen-Flora. It is stamped in the center of the rear cover: 1855. It serves to contain 58 mounted samples on white mounting sheets with pink tissue covers and gilt edges. Each sheet has a large, bold, calligraphic designation of the plant's Latin name above its generic name. Verso of each mounting sheet has a calligraphic number and 3-4 lines of notes (clear German Gothic script - the same hand throughout).

Most likely an incomplete copy - and sold as such. There is no text and the box seems to be made for more samples than are present. There is nothing like it in OCLC.
