New York: John Gilmary Shea., 1866. Charlevoix, a French Jesuit, was the first historian of New France. In 1720 he was sent to Quebec to find a route to the Western Sea, He reached the Mississippi in 1721 and followed it to the Gulf Coast. Sabin 12137 notes, "This is the first translation into English of Charlevoix's celebrated and important work. Dr. Shea has added notes, corrected references, and improved the bibliography, at the same time retaining, in all its originality, Charlevoix's text." See also Howes C-307. Six volumes uniformly bound in publisher's half morocco over boards. Light binding wear to the first five volumes. The sixth volume shows water staining in the gutter margins at the front and back of the book. The back board is also water stained. Overall a very good set of an important history..
