In 1955 Stanford University began the computerization of the banking industry by developing the ERMA system for Bank of America in San Francisco. General Electric delivered the first 32 ERMA machines to Bank of America in 1959, and the ERMA system was widely adopted by U.S. banks in 1959 and 1960.
