First edition, 2nd issue post-dated 1886 though some copies have the earlier 1885 date on the title-page. ACCOMPANIED BY its companion:
THE ADMIRAL'S CARAVAN by Charles E Carryl. New York: Century Co., 1892. Illustrated by Reginald B. Birch. Square 8vo, [iii], 140pp; colored pictorial gray cloth gilt-titled on front cover and spine (spine dulled). Both copies INSCRIBED by its author to James Lawson with salutations, respectively dated Halloween 1885 and Oct. 10, 1892. With two vintage photographs of the author, the whole enclosed in a gilt brown leather-backed folding cloth case.
Both tales were earlier serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine and considered examples of indigenous American fantasies.
