The lavishly produced, pioneering study of the sacred mushrooms of Mexico, embracing anthropology, archology, natural history and chemistry. Beginning in 1953, Heim accompanied R. Gordon Wasson on his expediitions to Mexico and subsequently brought samples to Albert Hofmann, who isolated the hallucinogenic compounds psilocybine and psilocine at the Sandoz laboratories. The first volume includes Wasson's detailed compilation of historical and archival sources and his discussion of the mushrooms in contemporary Mexico; Heim's descriptive and taxonomic studies; documentation of psycho-physiological effects; and accounts by Hofmann and others of the chemistry and pharmacology of psilocybine. The second volume contains further ethnological and anthropological observations, descriptive studies, and additional accounts of ingestion. Original printed wrappers. A fine, unopened set.
