Early IBM Ephemera -- Technological Innovation, Civil Rights and Equity in Education in the 1950s and 1960s "Think

  • United States: IBM, 1969
United States: IBM, 1969. Very good. Light dust soiling, rubbing, the occasional crease.. Four (4) issues of "Think", an IBM magazine published for employees and customers that encouraged critical thinking and humanitarian research. The name is derived from IBM CEO's Thomas J. Watson's early company mission/slogan, "Think", which is still used today in the context of their main conference title and "ThinkPad" computers. These issues were published between October 1955 and September 1969, and provide insight into the company's culture and news during this period. It is interesting to see how humanitarian the company was, given its primary purpose (technology) which is often divorced from the humanities today. Some interesting article titles from these issues include: "Ten Years of United Nations"; "What the Bible Can Do For You"; "Sports-- Should Boys Have Guns?"; "Citizens Face School Issues"; "Scrimshaw: Art of the Whale Hunters"; "The Liberal College and Christian Values"; and "Music-- Ben Franklin's Harmonica". Note the drastic shift from the early 1950s issues to the 1969 issue, which tackles civil rights, race, and discrimination head-on in real time. Article titles from this issue include "Now, Focus on High School Unrest"; "Detroit Builds from the Ashes"; "The Toll Youth Pays for Freedom"; and "The Rural Poor-- Broken Promises, Broken Lives". The emphasis on social unrest and struggle is made even more clear by the cover photo, which shows a cracked school blackboard with chalk writing on it. The three earlier issues measure approx. 12" by 9" each and are approx. 36 pp, illus.; the later 1969 issue measures approx. 11" by 8.25" and is 32 pp., illus. All are in their original photo illustrated wrps.
