Algren's most well-known novel, a tale of a morphine-addicted gambler that was the basis for the 1955 Otto Preminger-directed film of the same name, which put up a serious challenge to the tenets of the Motion Picture Production Code. It was one of the first major Hollywood films to achieve significant books despite having initially been released (by United Artists) without a Code seal. .
