LATE 19TH CENTURY "THE SPEAKING PICTURE BOOK" H. GREVEL & CO., LONDON

  • Late 19th Century
Late 19th Century. A Victorian mechanical "speaking" picture book employing a pull-cord mechanism to reproduce animal and infant sounds-an early and innovative example of sound technology in children's publishing. Chromolithographed illustrations with accompanying verses depict The Cock, The Donkey, The Lamb, The Birds, The Cow, The Cuckoo, The Goat, and The Baby. Instructions at front explain operation: cords pulled beneath each image activate the corresponding sound. Measurements: approx. 9.5 × 12.75 × 2.25 in.

In Good (+) condition. Binding worn and fragile, with losses and fraying to spine ends, corners, and edges; spine cloth partially split, exposing board. Boards with rubbing, surface wear, and scattered stains. Interior with moderate to heavy toning, foxing, stains, and general soiling throughout. Final page covering the mechanism detached. Internal sound apparatus present and functioning, except for the "Mamma" and "Papa" voices, which produce a similar tone due to a displaced wooden component. 1408090. Special Collections - Upstairs.
