Original white buckram with gilt facsimile signature on covers, gilt lettering and ruling on red labels of spines; in original stiff tan cloth dustjackets with gilt facsimile signatures on covers. Gilt top edges. Frontispiece color cartoon. Title pages printed in red and black with red publisher's device. Decorative initials. With a foreword by Theodore Roosevelt. Photogravure portrait photo of Raemaker facing introduction. Block heavy gray paper.
Vol. I contains the first 54 full page illustrations mounted to plates, plus frontispiece and gravure portrait, Vol. 2 with illustrations No. 55 - 125 of Louis Raemaker cartoons. They ... constitute the most powerful of the honorable contributions made by neutrals to the cause of civilization in the World War. Of course it is the combatants themselves who have furnished, for good or evil, the heroes who in history will stand out forevermore as towering figures of light or gloom against the lucid background of the war." Laid in typed leter to Ketterlinus from The Century Co Publishers, signed by publication manager, several copies of the letter and magazine pages, and partial Good Times section of the Trenton Times, November 12, 1976, laid in. Cloth dustjackets heavily water-stained, binding of volume one with water staining along top of front and back cover. Vol. I. with some loss of bottom label on spine. Block with occasional staining along top edges of pages, not affecting plates. Some of the plates age-toned along edges. Illustrated Ex-Libris of J.L. and E.B. Ketterlinus on inside front covers. Dustjackets in overall poor, bindings in fair, blocks in good, and plates in very good condition.
