  • USA: Macmillan and Co., 1889
By Alfred Russel Wallace

First US Edition w/John Wilson and Son to the verso of the title page and 2 pages of Macmillan ads to the back of the book. A Very Good to Near Fine copy, with a mild lean to the binding (else tight), light rubbing to the edges, some scattered age-spotting through the text, and a previous owner's stamp to the front free paper. Also included, a Second and Revised edition of Wallace's "Island Life", in similar condition to "Darwinism"; this copy from the personal library of J. Kenneth Doutt, author, scientist, and museum curator. A handsome pair of volumes from the preeminent scientist, generally given credit for developing the theory of natural selection at about the same time as Darwin published his Origin of Species; subsequently Wallace became one of Darwin's leading advocates and expounded on the theory in his own work (including these 2 works). Not remaindered, not ex-library; will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.
