Covers show light wear. Spines and joints show some rubbing, never heavy. Volume 1 has a frontipiece portrait of the author, minor peripheral foxing. Large folding map in Volume 1 is intact, very lightly foxed, mainly at peripohery. Volume 2 also has a large folding map, intact and in similar condition to the map in Volume 1. Volume 3 has a smaller folding map in similar, very nice condition. A total of four additional plates, the frontispiece and three folding maps. Collated complete when compared to those listed in the OCLC WorldCat (15 libraries worldwide own this set). A mellow set of this classic examination of Roman history. The first edition was published in six volumes, quarto in size, over the years 1776-1788. The first octavo edition was printed in 1783.
