[Photographs Documenting Service in Occupied Cuba and the Phillipines]

  • Cuba and The Philippines , 1919
Cuba and The Philippines, 1919. Good +. 72 loose photographs measuring from 1½” x 2½” to 2½” x 4½” and 24 are captioned on versos. Generally good plus to very good plus.

This is a group of photographs which document an unidentified marine's life in Cuba and the Philippines around 1919. He was likely with the 114th Company of the United States Marines as that's the unit of one of the men identified here; their barracks at Dos Rios is identified as well.

We see the Philippine Trust Building in Manila which was used as a Red Cross shelter, Santo Tomas, and thatched huts which acted as barracks. Several shots show Marines posing with locals, there are a few interesting street scenes, several show men on ship, and there's a large group shot of marines, presumably the 114th. There are also several shots of training and men at Parris Island, a great image of a cemetery, and a couple showing a plane. In Cuba, we see the Consular Office, mills and marine guard tents, rail yards, a sugar plantation, men shoveling coal at Guantanamo Bay, and Morro Castle.
