A cult classic work of antifascism. James Stewart Martin was in charge of breaking up the German industrial machine after the Second World War, but he was thwarted by powerful Americans and Englishmen who had done good business with the Nazis and had no desire to put their own fortunes at risk. Martin inscribed this copy to Senator Wayne Morse, a fiery Oregonian who was one of just two senators to oppose the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that gave President Lyndon B. Johnson the ability to wage war in Vietnam. Like the author of this book, Morse — who continued to oppose the Vietnam War for its duration — knew what it was like to be the voice of conscience.
