22 x 15x5 cm hardcover, leather spine with gilt black leather title label, gilt compartments, leather corners, and marbled blue paper covered boards, patterned endpapers, bookplate of Robert L Chevalier MD to front paste down, i-xxviii, 788 pp, 1 black & white plate and 48 hand colored engraved plates. Covers, corners, and spine edges rubbed, browning to page edges, scattered foxing to text with plates largely unaffected. A few pencilled notations on the plates. Very good minus in custom archival mylar cover.
CARL GUSTAV CALWER (1821 – 1874) was a German entomologist who specialized in Coleoptera. He wrote initially with the Stuttgart professor Dr Gustav Jäger Käferbuch, Naturgeschichte der Käfer Europas published by Julius Hoffmann. This very popular work was successively reprinted until 1916.
