By Goldsmith, Oliver
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1908. Turk's Head Edition. Near Fine. One of one hundred numbered sets ("The Primrose Hundred") within the Turk's Head Edition of 1,000 copies, this being copy twenty. Leaves measuring 160 x 240 mm, with the set collectively occupying 42 cm (16.5 in) of shelf space. A Near Fine set. Attractively bound in full red morocco. Spine in six compartments with raised bands. Spine and boards elaborately stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt. Some rubbing to crowns of a few volumes, slight cosmetic wear to joints; otherwise, a very attractive set, bright and clean throughout. Illustrated with eighty photogravure plates.

This attractive edition collects Goldsmith's prose and poetry from throughout his career. The set includes, of course, The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), Goldsmith's most famous novel; as well as his poem "The Hermit"; his popular plays She Stoops to Conquer and The Good-Natur'd Man; and his nonfiction.

The edition was named for the Turk's Head, a London tavern, which "was a favorite haunt and a kind of social headquarters of the men of letters in Goldsmith's day. It was at this place of entertainment, too, that the Literary Club, the most famous organisation of its kind in the history of English letters, held its meetings" (publisher's note). Near Fine.
