The Waves
[554] pp. Thick 8vo (194 x 129 mm.), orig. blue screen-printed covers with flaps, Ota-style sewn binding, title screen-printed on spine. Berlin: backbonebooks, 2025.
A vibrant homage by Claudia de la Torre (b. 1986) to Virginia Woolf’s 1931 novel, this artist’s book replaces nearly all of the original book’s text with richly printed color pages determined by colors mentioned in the text. The colors and the pages on which they appear are screen-printed on the flaps of the covers.
From the artist’s website: “The Waves by Virginia Woolf resists linear narrative, unfolding instead through rhythm, repetition, and interior voices. Inspired by this structure, I created an artist’s book that translates the novel’s language into color. Each page presents a single color reference from the text, rendered as a monochrome surface and arranged in sequence. The result is an abstract visual narrative where time is felt through intensity rather than events—allowing Woolf’s rhythm to guide the flow, like waves across the page.”
As new. Edition of 15 numbered copies. This book was awarded first prize for the Fundación Ankaria’s 12th Artist Book Award in 2026.
