An Autographed Note By A Naval Lieutenant About Spanish Prisoners During The Spanish-American War
- SIGNED
E. K. MOORE. Edward Kirby Moore served as a U. S. Lieutenant Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy of Annapolis. He was a career Navy officer, becoming a midshipman in 1864 and being promoted to lieutenant in 1894. ANS. 1pg. September 13, 1898. Annapolis, Maryland. An autographed note signed E. K. Moore: Dear Sir; Thousands of such letters as yours were received and for reasons best known to those having charge of the Spanish prisoners they were not delivered. Return your stamp on the outside of this letter. Respectfully, E. K. Moore Lieut. Comdt. U.S.N.. This note is about Spanish prisoners during the Spanish-American War. By September, much of the fighting had ceased and many prisoners were transported to the Annapolis U.S. Naval Academy between June and September of 1898, where it served as a detention center. The note reflects the large volume of letters the academy was receiving, and that letters were often not delivered to the prisoners. This note is in very good condition and attached to a larger board.
