Boston, Massachusetts, 1849. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page letter, written by “E.B.” to his “Friend S.” is datelined “Boston Aug 19 . . 49”. Very well written and easily readable. In nice shape.

In this letter E.B. reports on an unusually, large two-day militia “encampment held at Neponset about 6 miles from Boston.

“There was twenty uniformed companies and they looked pretty nice. It was a regular old fashioned country muster on a big scale. There was plenty of pedlars of all sorts drinking and gambling in abundance. 30 stands of the later and all kinds and there was a good many black eyes and sore head brought back to B. There is to be another of the same sort at Concord next week. . ..”

He also invites his friend to visit while President Zachary Taylor is in town.

“The President is expected here in about a month. I don’t see why some of your Whig boys can’t sail down about that time and see him it will probably be our only chance. . .. I suppose the democrats in L. feel very much elated with the late elections news, it looks pretty dark now, but I guess Old Zach will keep them straight-enough 4 years to come.”
Lastly, E.B. provides an update on a Cholera outbreak in Boston.

“There has been considerable excitement here about the cholera there has not been but a very few cases until this month . . . it has increased. . .. It is mostly confined to Foreigners so far, there was 94 deaths last week and about 16 a day this week. . .. It makes provision dealers grumble. . .." “Old Rough and Ready” was not able to keep the Democrats straight for the next four years. He died while in office and was succeeded by Millard Filmore. Although some suspected arsenic poisoning, he died from cholera morbus (acute gastroenteritis) four days after eating cherries and iced milk at a Fourth of July celebration, after which he developed severe stomach cramps, violent diarrhea, and dehydration.

An enjoyable and enlightening first-person account about significant events occurring in Boston in the summer of 1849.
