Portrait of the Right Honorable Admiral Lord Nelson, K.B., Mezzotint Framed Under Glass [Horatio]
- Single Sheet
- London: William Barnard, 1799
London: William Barnard, 1799. Single Sheet. Good. Abbott, Lemuel Francis; Barnard, William. Stain on bottom corner, paper somewhat toned but overall well-preserved, minor wear to frame. 1799 Single Sheet. 32 1/4 x 22 3/8. Wooden frame with gilt accents on interior bevel. Mezzotint print under glass, with some of outer portions covered by frame. A striking image of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. This pose became a trademark of Nelson's after he lost his right arm raiding Tenerife in 1797, necessitating the right sleeve be pinned up for the portrait. William Barnard engraved the print from a painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott, which was produced the year Nelson lost his arm. It has become one of the most recognizable portraits of one of Britain's most famous military commanders, and a symbol of naval heroism in general.
