American modernist composer Elliott Carter is shown in his studio in 1960, with pianist Paul Jacobs ca. 1981 and with conductor Robert Craft ca. 1985. Elliott Carter (1908-2012) is internationally recognized as one of the most influential American voices in classical music, and a leading figure of modernism in the 20th and 21st centuries. Among his better-known works are the Variations for Orchestra (1954–55); the Double Concerto for Harpsichord and Piano with Two Chamber Orchestras (1959–61); the Piano Concerto (1964–65), written as an 85th-birthday present for Igor Stravinsky; and the Concerto for Orchestra (1969), loosely based on a poem by Saint-John Perse.
