This is the first of two editions, the second also published in 1793. John Jenkins called this Oration Adams's first published work. According to ESTC , it is his first work published in the United States. In 1792 his "Observations on Paine's Rights of Man" was printed in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Adams's subject is the "obstinacy and cruelty" of the Crown, the events leading to Independence, the deficiencies of the Articles of Confederation, and the successful attempt to establish "the elementary principles of government" under the Constitution.
Adams also discusses current European events, alluding to "the dogs of war" unleashed there.
